Independent insurance rankings and guides
Insightful Coverage is an independent publisher. We rank insurance companies across every major line and explain, in plain language, what the policies actually say.
The site is written and maintained by Ryan Hearn, a licensed insurance producer in California, license #0L14758, licensed since 2016. That matters in one specific way: the parts of these reviews dealing with policy language — what an exclusion actually excludes, replacement cost versus actual cash value, how a definition of disability changes what gets paid — are written by someone who sells these products and has read the contracts.
What we do not do is as important as what we do. There are no quote forms on this site. We never ask for your address, your date of birth, your driving record or your health history, because we do not sell insurance here and have no use for them. Your details are not passed to agents, and nothing you do on this site puts you on a call list. At the time of writing we carry no affiliate links and earn no commission from any insurer.
Rankings by insurance line
Each of these covers who a company is structurally good at serving, and who it does not suit. We do not publish a score out of ten, because a single number implies a precision we do not have.
- Car insurance — what actually moves your premium, and which insurers fit which kinds of driver.
- Homeowners insurance — where the real differences sit, starting with replacement cost versus actual cash value.
- Renters insurance — the cheapest coverage most people skip, and who writes it well.
- Life insurance — term versus permanent, and which companies suit which situations.
- Health insurance — the honest one. There is no national best health insurer, because plans are sold county by county. This page explains how to compare what is actually available where you live.
- Disability insurance — the line where the contract language matters most, reviewed by a producer who reads it.
- Business insurance — for small businesses and gig workers, where the standard advice usually does not fit.
- Travel insurance — what a travel policy actually covers, which is rarely what people assume.
You can also see all our rankings by category in one place.
Start here
If you are not shopping for a specific policy yet, these are the guides worth your time first.
- How to file an insurance claim — a step-by-step walkthrough, and the one every reader eventually needs.
- How to read your homeowner’s policy — most people never read theirs. This makes the language navigable.
- Choosing the right deductible for your auto policy — how to work out your own break-even point rather than guessing.
- What renters insurance is actually for — and why you probably need it even though you think you do not.
- A beginner’s guide to car insurance — what each coverage on the declarations page does.
How we rank, and how we make money
We publish our methodology, which is unusual, and we would rather you read it than take our word for anything.
In short: we weigh financial strength, complaint records filed with regulators, coverage and policy language, price, and how hard the company is to deal with — in roughly that order. We do not accept payment in exchange for a ranking, a placement or a favorable review, and no insurance company has any input into what appears here. We deliberately keep years out of our page titles, because a year makes a promise about currency that a one-person publication cannot keep.
Read how we rank insurance companies, including where our data comes from and what we deliberately do not do.
The newsletter
The newsletter has not launched yet. Around 500 people have asked to be told when it does, and you are welcome to join them.
When it starts, it will be occasional, it will be about what actually changed in insurance rather than what is trending, and you will be able to leave in one click. We will not sell your address or send you anything else.
